Under gray and cloudy skies, with occasional rain drops, over 100 people attended the PA Historical Marker Dedication and Ribbon Cutting at the site of the former St. Nicholas Church, North Side. Dressed in colorful Croatian costumes, members of the Junior Tamburitzans of Duquesne, PA, handed out keepsake programs to the event at the entrance to the sidewalk trail, across the street from Penn Brewery. Rain fell on the site of the former St. Nicholas R.C. Croatian Church along Route 28 in Troy Hill during the Pennsylvania Historical Marker Dedication June 20 as if the Heavens too mourned the loss of America’s first Croatian Catholic congregation.
The former St. Nicholas Croatian Church may no longer be there, but now there’s a memorial standing in its place.
Officials and parishioners who fought for years to preserve St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church along Route 28 in Troy Hill gathered Saturday for a bittersweet ceremony dedicating a memorial wall where the church once stood.
At the site of the former St. Nicholas Church on Route 28 in Troy Hill, a marker and plaza featuring the history and heritage of the church and its Croatian neighborhood will officially open with a public ceremony.
