ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH TIMELINE
1894
St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church founded at 1546 East Ohio Street. The First Mass was celebrated on August 11, 1894 by Reverend Dobroslav Josip Bozic.
1900
Construction of the St. Nicholas Church and Rectory at 1326 East Ohio Street had begun.
1901
Dedication of St. Nicholas on September 8. Mass said by Reverend Bosiljko Bekavac.
1917
St. Nicholas began religious instruction for students. Classes began on September 8.
1921
St. Nicholas moved 20 feet into and 8 feet up the hillside to accommodate a widening of East Ohio Street.
1931
St. Nicholas School opened for classes on August 1.
1944
Grotto erected in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes.
1950
Convent erected.
1952
Rectory remodeled.
1953
New pipe organ installed.
1976
St. Nicholas named a historic landmark by Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation.
1996
St. Nicholas determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
2001
St. Nicholas designated as a City Historic Structure in the City of Pittsburgh.
2004
St. Nicholas abruptly closed under the direction of then Bishop Donald Wuerl.
2013
St. Nicholas demolished under the direction of Bishop David Zubic, Diocese of Pittsburgh.
2015
St. Nicholas Historic Site Erected. Dedication of St. Nicholas Church PA Historical Marker Dedication & Ribbon Cutting for Historic Site held on June 20, 2015.
